The elbow silencer integrates both noise attenuation and directional turning functions; it not only eliminates noise originating from fans but also facilitates changes in ductwork direction. Characterized by its compact size and a frequency response dominated by low frequencies, this device offers significant advantages. When used in conjunction with other types of tubular silencers, it proves highly effective, flexible, and convenient, while also conserving space.
A sound-attenuating elbow is an elbow fitting lined with sound-absorbing material, designed to produce a significant attenuation effect on sound waves. This acoustic attenuation stems from three primary mechanisms: the absorption and reflection of near-axial waves at the elbow walls, and the conversion of the energy of these near-axial waves—during the directional turn—into the energy of oblique waves, which are then effectively absorbed by the lining material. When a right-angle attenuating elbow is inserted into a rectangular duct—with sound-absorbing liners extending for a length of 2 to 4 *lz* (where *lz* represents the characteristic width of the duct cross-section) on both sides of the elbow—the insertion loss at high frequencies is approximately 10 dB greater than that of a straight duct section of equivalent length lined with the same material. "High frequency" in this context refers to frequencies exceeding the duct's cutoff frequency. At low frequencies, the performance of the attenuating elbow is comparable to that of a straight duct section of equal length lined with the same material, yielding no additional insertion loss.
