  • A fire damper is a type of valve that utilizes a fusible alloy for temperature control, closing via the combined action of gravity and a spring mechanism. Newer product models also employ shape-memory alloys, which deform in response to heat to trigger the valve's closure.

    Function: When the temperature of the flue gas reaches 280°C—at which point building occupants have largely completed their evacuation and further smoke extraction serves no practical purpose—the smoke is presumed to be carrying active flames; the valve then closes automatically to prevent the fire from spreading.

    1. Fire dampers can be interlocked with ventilation fans and smoke extraction fans.

    2. A clear space of no less than 200 mm must be maintained on the side of the valve housing the operating mechanism to facilitate inspection and maintenance.

    3. Prior to installation, verify that the valve's operating mechanism is intact and that its movement is flexible and effective.

    4. Fire dampers should be installed within duct sections located immediately adjacent to walls or floor slabs. For dampers situated on either side of a fire-rated partition wall, the distance from the valve to the wall surface must not exceed 200 mm. Furthermore, within a 2.0-meter radius on both sides of the fire damper, the ductwork and its associated thermal insulation materials must be constructed from non-combustible materials.

    5. Fire dampers must be supported by independent hangers or brackets to ensure that any deformation of the ductwork during a fire does not compromise the damper's operational integrity.

    6. The fusible link (thermal element) of the fire damper should be positioned on the side facing the area presenting the higher fire risk.
